Wednesday calls for the Fab Spotlight our version of the Woman Crush Wednesday.  Soft spoken, adores nature, dripping with melanin –  just to mention a few…these are just some of the qualities i would use to describe our fab model. In addition, her zest on self confidence and body positivity is evident by the way she expresses her words through the interview. We talk to Maurel Wambua on her modeling career so far and so much more…

Spotlight 10

What inspired you to get into modeling? Was modeling part of your dream growing up?

Modeling was not part of my dream while growing up; my love for modelling is recent and began after my high school education. I was amazed at how models had a voice and how they were able to achieve certain necessities and projects with this voice. I wanted my own strong voice that would enable me to change the way the plus size community was viewed and also with aim to change my country Kenya. In addition, plus size modelling was a great contradicting issue. All the discrimination and the harsh words just charged me up and here I am.

What are your thoughts on the plus size modeling industry in Kenya?

The industry is actually growing rapidly. I think it’s doing good and encouraging a lot of women to shine. It has paved way to changes in the society e.g. social change and body acceptance. I would say it’s just amazing because confidence has reigned among many plus sized women in Kenya.

What according to you do you think is the biggest misconception about plus sized models?

I think it’s the fact that many think that we do not love and care about our appearance and we are actually afraid to participate in fashion until we reach a certain size. Well, most of us actually love our bodies- fashion and beauty is our strong hold.

What is one thing about modeling that you didn’t know that you have learnt along the way?

I came to realize that expectations don’t always match reality. I expected many opportunities but due to a build of models focusing on one job, this is next to impossible at times. I also learnt that shoots can be hectic to achieve that perfect photo.

How has modelling shaped your self-image? Have you ever felt that certain beauty standards were inaccessible to you as a plus size woman?

My self-image has improved since I became a model. I dress better, walk better and I manage my time well. It has bettered my confidence and enabled me to brand myself better. It has also enabled me to keep healthy and fit.

Spotlight 2

What is the most challenging aspect of modelling as a profession?

For me it would be the fact that you may not get a chance to work for weeks or even months, its hectic if one is not patient.

With regard to highlighting body positivity, did you always feel comfortable with yourself and your body?

Sincerely, I was not as comfortable with my body before as now. Growing up I faced a lot of challenges, insults and teases about being fat. It was depressing. Nevertheless I came across an article on body acceptance that changed my life. It enabled me to accept myself and love myself. I made up my mind that I should define my own body and would not let anyone define it for me.  I chose to be the best of who I was, so from that day I chose to block the naysayers from my life. This has helped me to love every inch of me and with that I stopped being fat: I was CURVY. I was enough. I AM ENOUGH.

How would you define your personal style? What do you feel most beautiful wearing?

I would define my personal style as edgy, classy and sexy.

I feel most beautiful wearing a middy body con and a pair of sassy heels with accessories.

What are some of the heroes of your wardrobe?

One, my black leather coat because it compliments most outfits, both casual and official outfits.  Two, body con dresses are my to go to outfits to flaunt those curves in style. Three, high waist pants are so comfortable to wear and bring a vintage touch on the outfit. They also give me room to be edgy. Lastly a pair of heels to compliment my classy outfits.

Spotlight what is in your model bag…

You will find a bottle of water which keep me hydrated. My portfolio which enables me to showcase my work. Make up kit mostly my mascara and lipstick. I never forget my lip balm for moisturizing my lips. Mints for fresh breath and a packet of wet wipes its essential.

Spotlight 5

What is your favorite city in Kenya and where do you like to hang out there?

Nairobi city tops all. I mostly enjoy hanging out at the Kenya National Archives going through the Kenyan history and enjoying the richness of various African cultures. My other favourite spot is the Karura Forest where I enjoy the nature and some recreational activities it reliefs me and rejuvenates my soul.

What advice would you give to girls who are struggling to love themselves and think they are not beautiful?

We are created in God’s image and likeness and I believe that everyone is beautiful in their own special way. Beauty is not only the outside appearance but also the inner self, how you perceive yourself. My favourite quote by Iyanla Vanzant that i live by is : “…when you love yourself you pave the way for all you want and need to come to you at the right time in the perfect way.”
