Over and over again, we have been warned about comparison. That we should stay in our own lane and celebrate what we have lest we loose our minds trying to accomplish someone’s chapter before we even flip our own books. Society has raised us to hush all the talk on our beautiful voluptuous bodies, our dark skins and our ending stripes that we earned on our bodies. We are all unique. Let’s celebrate our diversity proudly.

We sat with Susan for the fab spotlight, here is what she had to say…

What inspired you to get into modeling?

I watched Plus Fabulosity’s interview and learning that they actually cast plus size models got me interested. The ladies looked so beautiful in their skin and I instantly knew I wanted to be one of them.

What are your thoughts on the plus size modelling industry in Kenya?

I believe beauty is more than just size and color and hence all ladies/models should be given a chance. When it comes to selling products, equal chance should be given to all, after all there is no shelf for plus size and slender all people use products based on preference and not size.

Our heritage is in bold and beautiful, that is who we are and  we should not try to change that because of any kind of perceived influence.

What according to you is the biggest misconception about plus size models?

That big is not beautiful and appealing.

How has modeling shaped your self-image?

I am more confident in who I am and I believe I am beautiful just the way I am. I don’t have to shed off weight forcefully to fit in anymore.

Have you ever felt that certain beauty standards were inaccessible to you as a plus-size lady?

Not  exactly. The challenge maybe, would just be fear of accepting that I am a plus size model and that I can negotiate for anything I want. Being aware of who I am has made it much easier as I am more confident and I have learnt what does and doesn’t work for me.

What is the most challenging aspect of modelling as a profession?

Creating a niche for myself. There are well known models already and most of the time, people celebrate familiar faces and do not necessarily embrace new entrants. Its also a good thing though because it pushes me to  be consistent and to work harder.

Did you always feel so comfortable with yourself and your body?

There were days I felt so bad about myself, being a plus size, I  stood out in the midst of my peers and for a long time my self esteem was low because of it. When I learnt of Plus Fab, I decided to do more for me, it has been and still continues to be a journey of discovery and building confidence.

What are your positive affirmations that give you the oomph and confidence?

I am more than just a size fourteen model, with a beautiful skin: I am confident, talented and most importantly, I love my community, people and country.

How would you define your personal style? What do you feel most beautiful wearing?

I love wearing bright colors as they make me feel young happy and energetic. I feel beautiful when I wear knee length dresses with an A cut.
