Following the many questions that have come through our social media platforms, emails, phone calls and messages, we took it to answer the frequent questions asked on being a plus size model. Most people think modeling is easy and that it is something we can all do. You want to be established model? Here is our Modeling Cheat Sheet that could help you out.

Plus size models lie between the grey area of size 12 and above. Despite the vacuous myth about the plus size physique that they are lazy, gluttonous and vapid, a plus size model should be fit and healthy.

LUCIA 2 How does one start as a plus size model?

Being a plus size model is not all about looks and a body to match. Being a plus size model is about passion, self love and having a tough skin to make it through the industry that is still deemed petite dominated. Be ready to face rejection and negative vibe from those still in the archaic era. It is all about self and what you are willing to give. It is all dedication and hard work.

For a start, you need a portfolio of yourself. This includes photos of who you are; both full length photos and head-shots of yourself. Aim for at least one high-quality face shot and a full-body shot in a simple, flattering attire. Time and again you will hear a modeling agent asking for a Polaroid; for a start the photos don’t need to be professionally done but they should be crisp clear and bring out the personality in you. Please note…Less is more and quality sells over quantity. Use different colour tones, backgrounds and outfits as well.

Move to looking and researching about the trusted agencies in your area, e.g. Plus Fabulosity. Call and book an appointment with them. On the day of the meeting, be presentable, confident and fluent. Remember to bring your portfolio with you.

Some agencies ask models to fill out forms on the day of casting calls, be sure to know your body measurements, contacts and the general information that could be asked. Whatever the outcome during the casting call, learn to smile, accept rejection, learning from the experience and moving on to be better. Most important, your self confidence should not be altered at all, if anything, it should raise a notch higher.
