Someone once said, you are a product of your loveliness. Your self believe and your tough skin to take it all from the nay sayers and move on. Tough times don’t last; tough people do… always remember to unleash your inner wonder woman, fake it till you make it.

Today’s fabulous spotlight is on Margaret, a student pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree  in Business Administration. Though a tad shyish and a person of less words, her zest to fight for body positivity is evident once we start the interview her firm words tell it all.

What inspired  you to  get into modeling? Was  it part of your dream growing up?

I remember watching  Citizen Power breakfast  a while back  and  I saw Fransisca Mwende, the CEO of  Plus Fabulosity, talking about embracing the body you have. I loved how she and the models present were so confident. I got so inspired because I have always wanted to be part of a community that showed younger girls that everyone  is  beautiful regardless of  body size.

Fashion TV was my obsession while growing up. I could strut all over the house trying to imitate what i saw on the programs. As you grow up people instill these myths and they tell you some things  are not to be pursued – I listened to them. When I heard of Plus Fabulosity, all those childhood dreams and my love for fashion were reborn.

What are your  thoughts  on  the plus size modelling  industry in Kenya

Plus size modeling in Kenya still needs a little bit more of indulgence and growth. The plus size market is large and I personally feel designers should explore that.

Do you think recognizing  diversity is important in  the modeling industry?

We are all created  differently  people are short, tall, dark ,light, plus size and slender ,the modeling industry plays a very big part in  the society  than what most people can imagine. Many of the young people will look at what is perceived  as beautiful and if  its put into specifics it then tells everyone  else that unless you fit into this criteria then you  are not worthy to be celebrated.

Recognizing  diversity is important since there are no specifics to what is beautiful  and diversity itself is beautiful and unique in it’s own way. Can you imagine a world of people looking  the  same? Same hair, same skin color,  same body size…how boring and plain it would be!!!

What is in your model bag ?

My make up kit, nail polish, wet wipes (very essential), safety pins, a pair of heels, body lotion and black leggings.

What according to you is the biggest misconception about plus size models?

That generally we are a lazy bunch and all we do is eat.

How has modelling shaped your body image?

Modelling has helped me build up my confidence, compared  to before. I was my biggest body critic; now am comfortable, confident and I have learnt to love my body…my flaws and all.

What are your positive affirmations that give you the oomph and confidence?

Beauty comes from within and that i am my own cheerleader.

If your modeling days are to be over tomorrow ,what would you want to remember?

The amazing people I have met through this journey and the light of positivity that it has brought into my life

How would you define your personal style? What do you feel most beautiful wearing?

Simple and classy, I try to be very well put together.

A little black dress that hugs my curves it makes me feel confident, sexy and beautiful.

What advice would you give to girls who are struggling  to love themselves

Don’t let people bring  you down, loving and accepting yourself is the best gift you can ever give yourself. People don’t determine your worth and beauty, that power  is only yours.
