Fab new month calls in for a fresh Wednesday spotlight and an awesome Fab model.  We are super stoked as we gear up for the Kenya Plus Size Fashion Weekend set to happen on the 8th of October at the Smith Hotel. Nothing feels so good and exciting as celebrating your skin, your flaws, celebrating yourself…Truth be told, beauty is from deep within and radiates through how you carry yourself.

Our spotlight today is on the hardworking and confident Maureen Mbithe. We sat with her to discuss her journey so far in the modeling industry as well as what she loves and much more…

Fab Maureen (3)

What inspired you to get into modeling? Was modelling part of your dream growing up?

Yes, I always dreamt of being a model as I was growing up.  I am so passionate about Fashion, make up and everything that comes with looking good and unique; that’s how I got inspired to get into modelling.

Why do you think recognizing diversity is important in the modelling world?

Because the world itself is diversified, each and every one of us has a unique character, unique body, habits, rituals that stand out and are different from the other. We are all different and all we can do is accept one another; and uplift each other. There is much sunshine for everyone. By accepting all body types the fashion world will be completely a revolution for the generations to come.

What is the one thing about modelling that you didn’t know that you have learnt along the way?

Above all, confidence is key, with that, you can do anything. And always remember to match confidence with a smile.

How has modelling shaped your self-image?

Modelling has given me an all rounded form. I am more compelled to serve the community and make a difference. I now dress not to impress but for myself. My built in confidence radiates in everything i do. I am more outgoing and also approachable. In short, my self image has had a 360 degree turn. Everyday you continue learning something new.

What is the most challenging aspect of modelling as a profession?

Just like any other person in the modelling profession, the biggest challenge  is getting a breakthrough, especially in the fashion runways, publications etc.

With regard to highlighting body positivity in individuality – did you always feel so comfortable with yourself and your body?

Yes and no, there were times I wouldn’t be comfortable with wearing something showing a little bit of skin like crop tops but now I don’t mind that at all. I only felt confident when my body was fully covered but that has changed.

What are your positive affirmations that give you the oomph and confidence?

Being a plus size is an added advantage – to me. I have something that other models don’t have, curves, no offense. That’s a plus for me.

How would you define your personal style? What do you feel most beautiful wearing?

I love to keep it simple but classy. I feel most beautiful when wearing makeup, not that I am not beautiful without it but I just love glamming myself up.

Model Bag…

I have a make up kit, wet wipes, pocket towels, strapless bra, water bottle, work out gear, and a pair of heels  and a  few snacks.

What is your favorite city in Kenya?

I love Mombasa, the climate and the people are too nice. I love the beach, the sand and the sun on my face is the best moment, let’s ignore the sunburns for a moment. I love the ocean. The peace and serenity.
